In systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune response is directed against one or several self antigens present throughout the body. Organ-specific autoimmune disorders usually target an antigen(s) present on a single organ or tissue and an immune response is limited to that specific organ. Within this group, the endocrine system appears to be a common target for autoimmune disease and will be the primary focus of this article.
