For the year 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that all foodborne infections from various viral and bacterial sources caused 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the U.S. (1,2). Most foodborne infections are self-limiting and the symptoms usually go away in 5-7 days; however, in some instances there can be serious complications.
