Primary Purpose and Function of the Job

Requirements and Competencies

Primary Responsibilities

• Coordinate with the education department regarding scheduling and implementation of programming needs
• Speak on behalf of the company during media relations events, as needed

Job Duties

The Sr. Specialist coordinates all activities for Point of Care Testing for the Outreach Laboratories. Investigate, recommend/develop new POCT procedures and/or instrumentation. Coordinate clerical activities, which may include answering telephones to give technical reports and information to staff, physicians, and nurses. Serve as technical consultant including problem solving for Point of Care Testing. Prepare and update laboratory protocols using NCCLS format. Perform monthly review of quality control and preventive maintenance. Recommend and initiate quality assurance studies. Oversee collection of QA data. Prepare reports, initiate corrective action protocol when results fall outside of acceptable limits. Take responsibility for the completion of all POCT proficiency testing programs. Monitor proficiency and competency testing, review all data, discuss with staff, and keep Faculty, Senior Supervisor/Manager informed of any problems. Review results as required by regulatory agencies. In addition, coordinate safety, competency, quality assurance, and education programs for the Outreach Clinics. The specialist is responsible for supply ordering, federal and state licenses, creation of SOPs for all outpatient POC testing, and creation of QC policies and logs. Must be able to travel to different outpatient clinics throughout Los Angeles county.

Job Qualifications

A current California Clinical Lab Scientist license is required. Two years of demonstrated skill in coordinating all activities of POCT to include: Knowledge and recent experience with current POCT laboratory instrumentation. Knowledge of HIS/LIS and POCT analyzer interfaces. Must have knowledge of test methodologies and menus of in-house functional areas. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills to interact with Nursing, physicians and staff. Knowledge of specimen collection and processing, reference ranges, test methodologies, CAP and other regulatory requirements, Phlebotomy procedures, PIE and QA/QI activities. Demonstrates understanding and application of age specific requirements. Must have sufficient knowledge of the functions of the instrument interfaces, the LIS reporting system, and HIS interface to recognize and diagnose problems and initiated corrective action as needed. Must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Must be able to travel throughout Los Angeles county regularly.
