Responsibilities

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist sets the highest standards for professionalism and competency in providing high quality patient centered diagnostic and therapeutic care, customer service, and education to patients within UCDHS and its affiliates. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist supports departmental goals through the performance of timely and accurate analytical blood and body fluid analysis in one or more of the technical sections including Transfusion Services, Chemistry/Special Chemistry, Hematology/Hemostasis/Special Coagulation, Hematopoietic Progenitor Stem Cell Lab (HPCL), Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Point of Care (POC), Toxicology, and Molecular Pathology.

Qualifications
REQUIRED 

  • Must possess California State Issued Clinical Laboratory Science license as appropriate for job responsibilities (current and renewed every two years as required).
  • Technical knowledge in one or more of the following sections: Transfusion Services, Chemistry, Flow Cytometry, Hematology/Hemostasis/Special Coagulation, Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Lab, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Point of Care Testing, Special Chemistry, and/or Toxicology.
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.
  • Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures; ability to resolve and report errors and aberrant results appropriately.
  • Possess technical knowledge to troubleshoot instrument/equipment problems and utilize appropriate resources to resolve problems.

PREFERRED

  • Knowledge of quality assurance, quality system essentials, continuous quality improvement, metrics, data analysis and audit processes
  • Possess outstanding written and oral communication skills.  Ability to lead discussions, to articulate test procedures, and to make effective presentations.
  • Possess excellent organization, time management, prioritization, strategic thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships and assist coworkers when needed, to accept directions from direct and indirect supervisors, to make changes based on supervisors’ evaluation.
  • Ability to use Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), EPIC EMR, hospital incident reporting systems (e.g. RL Solutions).
  • Knowledge of personal computer, word processing, data management, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to utilize effective listening and questioning techniques to educate trainees, residents and physicians in clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to maintain reports, documents and records according to policy and regulations.
  • Ability to work prioritize and work well under pressure and remain flexible in changing and fast-paced work environment and meet turnaround times while maintaining a high level of work performance.
  • Ability to maintain the security of confidential information, exercise judgment, tact and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information and situations.
  • Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment.

 Job Description:

The Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an exceptional temporary, Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join an active Diagnostic Lab supporting the medical research of the university.

This temporary assignment would be five (5) months, full time, beginning on, October 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018, excluding the university wide, winter closure shut down during, November 23rd-26th and December 23rd-January 7th.


Description:
Key duties of the position include hematology and chemistry on a variety of species. Microbiology experience would also be desired but not required. The work is performed in a small clinical laboratory setting supporting medical research at Stanford University Medical Center. CLS would independently plan and carry out the procedures necessary to complete the analysis, handles problems and corrects errors. Uses theoretical knowledge to design new protocols or assays with regard to new species or procedures or to enhance existing testing protocols.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific discipline or in medical technology, plus six months recent clinical lab experience in hematology and chemistry required; ASCP or CLS license required. Flexible schedule to work Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. required. The following are also desired: veterinary hematology experience, microbiology experience, Misys/Sunquest commercial lab software experience, general computer skills i.e. Word, Excel, etc.

Department of Veterans Affairs Central California Health Care System, a teaching facility, is actively seeking 2 full-time generalist clinical laboratory scientists

1 position to work AM shift with rotating weekends
2nd position to work PM shift with rotating weekends.

Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens primarily using automated techniques (including some manual techniques), and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Duties include routine and stat testing in all areas of the laboratory to support in-patient and out-patient care, as well as a robust ER serving our Valley veterans.

VACCHCS is CAP accredited and has a state-of-the-art, full service laboratory, which provides 24/7 service. National certification is required upon hire or within one year of employment.

Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related field is required with NACCLS accredited training. State licensure is not required. VACCHCS offers excellent benefits/competitive salary
