RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Independently performs moderate and highly complex clinical tests and accurately enters results.
  • Prepares and tests new reagents or controls and evaluates their usefulness; monitors and maintains supply.
  • Performs test calibrations and runs Quality Control material.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of routine analysis prior to releasing patient reports.
  • Accurately performs and records proficiency testing.
  • Initiates troubleshooting steps to evaluate testing failures and notifies Supervisor as needed.
  • Instructs new employees on proper procedures and provides on-going technical guidance to laboratory assistants.
  • Maintains professional growth through continuing education.

  • Demonstrates high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining HIPAA regulations.
  • Follow all laboratory policies and procedures including, but not limited to, general processes, safety and quality.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Required:

  • Either a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science or a BS degree Chemistry, Biology or related Life Science along with completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by HHS.
  • California CLS (MTA) License required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in multiple sections (ex: Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology) in an academic or clinical laboratory setting.
  • PREFERRED: ASCP certified.

This Technical Specialist position, located in the microbiology department in the laboratory service. The CLS, Technical Specialist, performs routine and STAT testing on blood, urine, and other body fluids and ensures staff assigned to the section perform duties in a timely and accurate manner. The incumbent is responsible for the training of subordinate staff in these lab sections. The incumbent is also responsible for compliance with all applicable accrediting agency requirements. The laboratory provides diagnostic services in support of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room care 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  Functions of this position include:

Determines specific assay protocols and specific instrument systems to be used. Modifies, adapts, and implements new testing methodologies to meet laboratory service needs. Responsibilities

The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist manages the testing staff in the Automated Chemistry and Urinalysis technical sections of the UCDH Clinical Pathology Laboratory, following all Departmental and governing organizations polices and guidelines, and ensures effective and efficient operations of the sections testing performance. The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist also oversees staff training and competency, investigates problems, makes operational decisions within the department and coordinates with other areas of the laboratory.

Qualifications

REQUIRED 

  • Possesses California State issued Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, (current and renewed every two years as required), preferred minimum of four (4) years of supervisory clinical laboratory science experience in Automated Chemistry in a large hospital laboratory setting.
  • Possesses technical knowledge of Chemistry and Urinalysis testing procedures and pre-analytical processes, policies and procedures as necessary for the supervision of this specialty laboratory section.
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.

PREFERRED

  • Technical knowledge and/or experience with Point of Care Testing (POCT).

Responsibilities

The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist manages the testing personnel in the Automated Chemistry/Urinalysis, Hematology/Hemostasis, and Blood Bank technical sections of the UCDH Clinical Pathology Laboratory on the Night Shift, following all Departmental and governing organizations polices and guidelines, and ensures effective and efficient operations of the sections testing performance. The Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist also oversees staff training and competency, investigates problems, makes operational decisions within the department and coordinates with other areas of the laboratory.

Qualifications

REQUIRED 

  • Possesses California State issued Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, (current and renewed every two years as required), preferred minimum of four (4) years of supervisory clinical laboratory science experience in Automated Chemistry in a large hospital laboratory setting.
  • Possesses technical knowledge of Chemistry and Urinalysis testing procedures and pre-analytical processes, policies and procedures as necessary for the supervision of this specialty laboratory section.
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.

PREFERRED

  • Technical knowledge and/or experience with Point of Care Testing (POCT)

 Job Description:

The Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an exceptional temporary, Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join an active Diagnostic Lab supporting the medical research of the university.

This temporary assignment would be five (5) months, full time, beginning on, October 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018, excluding the university wide, winter closure shut down during, November 23rd-26th and December 23rd-January 7th.

Key duties of the position include hematology and chemistry on a variety of species. Microbiology experience would also be desired but not required. The work is performed in a small clinical laboratory setting supporting medical research at Stanford University Medical Center. CLS would independently plan and carry out the procedures necessary to complete the analysis, handles problems and corrects errors. Uses theoretical knowledge to design new protocols or assays with regard to new species or procedures or to enhance existing testing protocols.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific discipline or in medical technology, plus six months recent clinical lab experience in hematology and chemistry required; ASCP or CLS license required. Flexible schedule to work Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. required. The following are also desired: veterinary hematology experience, microbiology experience, Misys/Sunquest commercial lab software experience, general computer skills i.e. Word, Excel, etc.
